What is Shechen Charity Orphan School?

Shechen Charity Orphan School is privately run charity home and primary school for orphans of Karze prefecture in east Tibet located in Karze Prefecture, west Sichuan, China. The purpose of the school is to provide traditional family living environment for orphans and to give them basic education alongside training in practical vocational skills. The school is based on ethical values and promotes Tibetan culture and tradition hand in hand with understanding and appreciation of the modern world.

Where is the school located?

The school is located near Dzogchen village in Dege County, Karze (ch. Ganzi) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan province of China. This is the Kham area of Tibet.

Why is the school needed?

Most people there live deep in the mountains without access to education or healthcare. Due to harsh living conditions many children lose one or both parents and become orphans. People are warmhearted and provide orphans with basic shelter and food; yet, as they themselves are poor, they are unable to provide children with a nurturing living environment or with education.

Who benefits from the school?

Firstly, the school benefits the orphans by giving them a warm home and a chance to develop themselves. School's positive influence will extend to the local community - by providing jobs and transfering the knowladge - and serve as a model of effective and relevant education in rural Tibetan areas. In addition everyone involved - working staff, volounteers and supporters - will benefit through gaining new experience, through making life meaningful by helping others, through establishing close and personal connections spanning across boundaries of cultures and nations.

Who are we?

Shechen Charity Orphan School is a non-governmental organization. The founder and president of the school is Gangshar Rinpoche, a young Buddhist master from Shechen Monastery in Derge County. He is assisted by a team of volounteers from the local Tibetan community, other parts of China and abroad.

Who supports the school?

This is a non-governmental endeavour and all funds for construction and running of the school need to be raised by ourselves. More than 1000 individuals from China and abroad contributed to the construction of the school, many of whom continue to support the school on the regular basis. The Government of Derge County and Karze Prefecture issued permission for the school, and provincial and central media reguraly report about our work. newspapers and TV stations.
